Up Periscope

So I was a sub today. Unfortunately, I couldn't see around corners. But I did get a glimpse of the future.

I spent my day at Lockhart High School as part chemistry teacher, part biology teacher, and part content mastery specialist. The best part of my day was helping a young man in CM with his geometry homework. I really enjoyed the one-on-one time with a student; I even saw the "I get it" look in his eyes at one point!

Being in front of a class of science students was nothing like I was expecting. I thought for sure I'd be fired for blowing up the room with wrongly mixed chemicals. But alas, they only worked on pre-assigned projects—no chemicals involved. The biology class was an adventure in itself, but the regular teacher warned me ahead of time. The project they were supposed to work on was already finished (or so they said) so we talked about social issues and their future career goals. A lot of the kids had concrete answers and others weren't sure yet. A few didn't take the discussion seriously and offered jokes of going to Africa to find themselves. As for me, I have glimpsed the future.

And I still want to be a teacher.
